ダニエル・パトナム・フロスト先生の自己紹介を掲載します。
Hello. I’m Dan Frost. Please call me Dan. I’m from the state of Oregon in America,which is on the west coast and north of California. When I was young, I often did hiking and camping. Oregon has a mountain range called the Cascades, where the air is pure and the sights are sometimes breath-takingly beautiful.
I first came to live in Japan in 1992. I had studied Japanese at an American University, but I couldn’t understand most of what people said. I wrote new words in a notebook and next to them their English translations. After about six months though, I decided to start using a Japanese-Japanese dictionary. From that point my learning of Japanese started to become much more enjoyable and effective. Instead of forcing my brain to think in two languages at the same time, I began learning to think in one language― Japanese.
I think that learning a foreign language is like learning how to swim. You can stand at the side of the pool for hours listening to someone explain how to swim, but you’ll never really learn until you actually get in the water and try! Standing away from the water and just listening to an explanation about swimming is like learning a foreign language through translation. At Kaiseikan, I will try to help students learn to think in English while they use it.

こんにちは。私はダン・フロストです。ダァンと呼んでください。アメリカのオレゴン州出身です。オレゴンは西海岸のカリフォルニア州の北側にあります。若い頃はよくハイキングやキャンプに行きました。オレゴンにはカスケード山脈と呼ばれる山脈があり、そこでは空気は澄んでおり、時に息をのむほど美しい光景が見られます。
私が日本に住むようになったのは１９９２年です。それまでアメリカの大学で日本語を勉強していましたが、人々の言っていることがほとんどわかりませんでした。ノートに新しい単語を書き、その隣に英語で意味を書いていました。しかし、約６ヶ月後、私は国語辞典を使い始めることにしました。その時から、私の日本語学習はより楽しく効率的なものになったのです。自分の脳に２カ国語で同時に考えさせることをやめ、その代わりに、１カ国語、つまり日本語で考えるようにし始めたのです。
私は外国語学習は泳ぎ方を習うことに似ていると思っています。あなたはプールサイドで何時間でも泳ぎ方の説明に耳を傾けることはできますが、実際に水に飛び込んでやってみなければ、実際に何も習うことはできないでしょう。 水から離れたところに立って、ただ泳ぎ方についての説明を聞くことは、訳を通して外国語を学ぶことに似ています。
開誠館では、英語を使いながら、英語で考えることができるよう生徒たちを手助けしていきたいと考えています。
