Super Arts and Sciences Course

スーパー文理コース

Aiming to enter public universities and difficult-to-enter private universities
Kaiseikan’s Super Arts and Sciences Course serves students who are especially motivated in their academic pursuits through specialized intensive study ultimately catered to each student’s university of choice. We cultivate “solid academic skills” based on “thinking, judgment, and expression,” and from this advanced foundation, provide individual guidance on specific university’s entrance exams and/or interview procedures, aiming to not only secure admission but to also ensure success for our students during the course of their higher education.

Formation of team consciousness
From the early grades, through study camps and class events, we nurture a system in which students face university entrance examinations as a “team game”. Although each student’s university goals are different, we encourage our students to take the initiative and set high goals for themselves and each other in order to increase synergy as a team and cultivate an environment of friendly competition.

Curriculum focused on difficult-to-enter universities
The classes are designed to prepare our students for their university entrance examinations. A cycle of preparation, class, and review is used to consolidate the content of the classes, using the national mock examinations held throughout the year as an indicator of achievement. Students focus on improving their academic abilities in each of the humanities and sciences and, especially in elective subjects (English, mathematics, science, geography, history, and civics), classes have small number of students allowing for greater individual guidance to be given in detail.

Well-developed learning support system
During long vacations, class subject instructors hold workshops to deepen students’ understanding of class content. We also hold off-campus study camps (3 days and 2 nights) to help students develop their independent learning habits. After-school seminars are held in order to advance students’ academic skills in subjects where they excel and to strengthen their ability in subjects, they find more difficult.

Motivating students to learn on their own
As part of the “Open Evening Program,” classrooms and study rooms are open until 7:00 p.m. on weekdays, allowing anyone to freely and independently study in a calm and relaxed environment. Daily use of the “Foresight Notebook” helps students to develop time management and study habits, and individual interviews are held to enhance the connection between homeroom teachers and students. With a strong relationship of mutual trust, our staff provide advice and guidance for our students on how to approach study and daily life habits.

Global Courses

グローバルコース

This course is designed to prepare and support students who are aiming to enter international universities and faculties in Japan, as well as universities overseas. Over the course of six years, we aim to develop the abilities necessary to participate in a global society. We aim to cultivate the mind through global education classes, overseas training, English camps, and other programs, including a homeroom system with native-English-speaking teachers. Students participate in at least seven hours of English classes per week. They are exposed to cultural nuances, differences in social norms and expectations, and solution-oriented tasks which are incorporated as practical English education. With this approach, students acquire the four English language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) that serve as the foundation of their interactive abilities.

In addition to daily conversation in English, students have frequent interviews with native homeroom teachers, in which guidance is provided with an emphasis on speaking and listening. All homerooms are conducted in English. Students also write in their Foresight Planner (a notebook for establishing good lifestyle habits) in English.

Since the new university entrance examinations require more comprehensive English skills than ever before, the acquisition of the four skills of English is strictly emphasized and pursued. Ability is assessed according to these four skill areas, including novel assessment methods and the use of private certification tests. For this reason, we have determined the English skills that students should acquire, and English classes are conducted all in English, guiding students in the acquisition of the four skills.

Inquiry-Based Learning is the Pillar of Learning
Students in the Global Course take specialized classes, such as International Relations, Languages and Cultures, and Academic Writing. In these classes, students explore global issues affecting today’s society, while learning the basics of inquiry and undertaking activities that compel them to generate and consolidate solutions. They explore themes of their own choosing and present the results of their research in English. To further broaden their skills and add a practical dimension to their learning, students do fieldwork, which is conducted in collaboration with external organizations.

Overseas Language Training
In the summer of the second year of high school, students who wish to participate can go to New Zealand for a 3-month or 5-month study abroad program. In the winter of the same year, students can also participate in a 4-night, 6-day study trip to the west coast of the United States with students from other courses.

Full support for exam preparation
We actively encourage students to take the Practical English Proficiency Test (Eiken) and the GTEC, and aim to have all Global students achieve Grade 1. To that end, native-English-speaking teachers provide class time as well as private tutoring for students. In addition, they support students studying for the TOEFL and TOEIC examinations.
