Transition 変遷
On April 1, 1924, Tetsuo Hasegawa founded Seishin High School for Girls (a four-year, full-time, general education school). With Japan’s future in mind and an awareness of the importance of education for its children the school coined the motto of “Sincerity, Respect and Love” in order to raise the education and status of children in a friendly family atmosphere. In April 1945, disaster struck when the school was destroyed by fire due to the war at the time.
In June 1947, Seishin Junior High School was established and the main school building was completed by March 1948. In April of the same year Seishin High School was reopened and was reorganized as an educational corporation by October 1950. Kouji Owada assumed office as the Chairman of Seishin Junior and Senior High School. Following were Tamotsu Shirai and Satoshi Nakamura who became the second and third chairmen of the school. Both Shirai and Nakamura were retired principals of the school.
In April 1996 (Heisei 8), newly appointed chairman, Kazufumi Takabayashi, conducted a drastic review of school management , policies and operation facilities. This new educational philosophy and policy were adapted to support the needs of society and advancement of the educational environment.
These newly developed policies opened the doors for a modernized schooling system and curriculum development. In April 1998, the school was renamed Hamamatsu Kaiseikan Junior and Senior High School. Along with an updated educational curriculum Hamamatsu Kaiseikan was now a coeducational school, uniforms were changed, improvements to the school’s main building, arena and other facilities were conducted.
Not forgetting the roots and traditions of Seishin Girls High School (1912-1926) and the motive of founder Tetsuo Hasegawa, the school built upon his dreams and established a new founding educational philosophy to guide the students who gather at “Hamamatsu Kaiseikan” to have an instilled sense of pride, to be motivated individuals that strive to improve themselves and the future of their society.
From then on, Hamamatsu Kaiseikan has continuously strived to facilitate a comfortable, safe environment that caters to the needs its students and which also accommodates individual growth and learning. In March 2002, a new 42,600 m2 comprehensive ground was completed. In September 2011, a 13,600 m2 artificial turf soccer field was installed. In August 2012, a new school building, “Miraikan,” was constructed. In December 2013, the artificial turf on the school grounds was completely replaced, and facilities for track and field events were completed, creating the foundation for a coeducational, liberal arts and martial arts school.
On the 90th anniversary of its founding, the school launched the “Future Strategy Project” and has since been strongly promoting “global education” and “ICT education,” which are demanded by the succeeding generation. The ability to think, judge, and express oneself, working with others of diverse backgrounds with confidence and individuality are skills which are honed in classes. Critical thinking, open-mindedness and self-expression are highly valued at the school as these are the skills needed to elevate the current and future society and academic standards.
The Founding Spirit 建学の精神
In April 1924, Tetsuo Hasegawa founded Seishin High School for Girls with the founding spirit of “nurturing women who are capable of becoming productive members of society through a warm family atmosphere between teacher and student, and through honesty and common sense.” In April 1998, the school was renamed Hamamatsu Kaiseikan Junior and Senior High School, and Kazufumi Takabayashi, the fourth chairman of the school, inherited the will of the founder, Tetsuo Hasegawa. He established the school’s new founding spirit as “nurturing rich humanity and the ability to express oneself; educating people with intelligence, morality, and sensitivity in harmony; fostering students who are sincere and have a good sense of common sense; and contributing to gender equality. We will nurture students who contribute to a gender-equal society with integrity and common sense.”
